What is paediatric acupuncture? Paediatric acupuncture is for babies, children and teenagers. It is a gentle approach that uses many different techniques to suit the age and temperament of the child. Non-invasive techniques such as Shonishin are sometimes used, which lightly brush and tap over acupuncture points. Traditional acupuncture with very fine needles is also used for older children, teens and when it is deemed necessary.

As a mother of two kids under the age of five, and an aunty to teenagers, Sunny has some experience of using these techniques. She is now studying paediatric acupuncture and  is looking to open her clinic to more little people. She has a keen interest in mental health, but has also seen patients for digestive issues and more.

A safe treatment for children: Acupuncture has been investigated for safety when treating children. It has been shown that there are few adverse events, with the majority being mild. The National Institutes of Health Consensus Statement states “one of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted procedures for the same conditions” (Jindal, et al 2008).

This has been demonstrated in cerebral palsy, neonatal abstinence syndrome, infantile colic, autism spectrum disorder and paediatric pain.

Please read The Scope of Acupuncture by the British Acupuncture Council for more detailed information (from page 28).

What to expect: Treatment times for children’s acupuncture sessions are roughly 30 minutes, although some may be shorter. During the initial treatment Sunny will carry out a consultation and a short taster treatment. Subsequent treatments involve a slightly longer treatment within the half an hour time slot.

For younger children there are toys to play with and whatever the age, we can go at your child’s pace. Please note that parents/carers are required to stay with their child throughout the treatment.

Costs: Paediatric acupuncture appointments are charged at £35.

Children’s Clinic Opening Times: The clinic is currently open on Thursday afternoons from 4-5pm. Please contact Sunny for further availability.
