What is massage?
Sunny offers pregnancy massage, sports massage, aromatherapy massage and indian head massage. Massage can be defined as the manipulation of deep and superficial layers of muscle, tendons, ligaments, fascia, joints, skin and the lymphatic vessels. To perform this manipulation practitioners use their hands, fingers, thumbs, elbows, and forearms. Massage has been used for centuries and in various forms, from ancient Ayurvedic medicine to Hippocrates to the Chinese Yellow Emperor. In Europe, Swedish physiologist Henry Ling developed massage in conjunction with a sound understanding of anatomy and physiology. Massage can help with back pain, lower back pain, upper back pain, neck pain, stiff neck, create relaxation and ease stress.
How does it work?
The main benefits of massage are relaxation, stress relief and healing of injuries. Relaxation is mainly achieved through the endorphin effect. As a touch therapy, massage stimulates the release of endorphins which act as the body’s natural pain relievers and mood enhances. This creates a sense of euphoria, enhances of the immune system and explains why we sleep better after a massage.
The healing of injuries, muscles and joints is due to massage techniques which loosen tight muscles and encourage the correct formation of scar tissue following injury (just as your skin scars – so do your muscles). Massage lengthens tight tissue, stimulates circulation, encourages the removal of waste material and brings fresh nutrients to tissues.
Massage is recommended for anyone with an injury, those who have been immobile for long periods (including an office job), and those in chronic pain including back pain such as lower back pain or upper back pain, neck pain or stiff neck. It’s also great for relaxation and stress management. Pregnancy massage is great during the prenatal and postnatal period.
Your treatment will typically last 1 hour (however this can be adjusted) and can be combined with other treatments.
Bespoke aromatherapy blends are used in every treatment if suitable. Each type of massage uses particular techniques and specific massage types can be requested. However I am also able to bring together these different techniques to provide a unique massage so don’t worry if you’re not sure what you need.
Your initial treatment includes a consultation looking into medical history and aspects of lifestyle which may be influencing your current condition. This not only ensures that the treatment is suitable for you but that positive effects are long lasting. Postural analysis may be required for sports massage. Structured aftercare will focus on maintaining results and a course of treatments is usually required. Throughout the treatment you will be covered by towels to maintain dignity. A calm environment supports relaxation and heated blankets are used in the winter months.
Suitable for all and fantastic for chronic and acute injuries from runner’s knee to back pain, lower back pain, upper back pain, neck pain and stiff neck. A very effective form of massage used for treating specific problems and injuries. It is common for muscle testing and a postural analysis to take place to determine the areas of focus so that cause as well as symptoms can be treated.
For correct rehabilitation focused aftercare is given including stretching, which means you learn to manage your condition. Sports massage starts off very light to warm the tissues and gradually works deeper and slower into problem areas, which is not only effective but relaxing too. Expect a little discomfort which soon gives way to relief!
Maintenance Massage – prevents injury by keeping muscles flexible and maintaining range of motion.
Event Massage – pre and post event massage helps your muscles to be effectively warmed up before an event and cooled down after. This prevents and heals injury.
Rehabilitation Massage – if you’ve injured yourself through either acute injury or your condition is more chronic through poor posture or repetitive movements then rehabilitation massage is utilised to get you back to your normal functioning.

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for therapeutic use. The use of plants for medicine is an ancient tradition. Aromatherapy employs techniques such inhalation and massage. Both of these routes of administration are safe if used in the correct quantities.
Inhalation affects the limbic system, the part of central nervous system which deals with memory and emotion. Aromatherapy Massage treatment allows the oils to be absorbed into the blood stream, and the massage itself affects the nervous system. Relaxation or stimulation of the nervous system depends upon which aromatherapy oils and massage techniques are used.
The goal of the Aromatherapist is to assess each client and create a bespoke blend. By looking at the properties of essential oils we can create blends for specific conditions and for each individual. Aromatherapy oils and carrier oils are of the highest quality, organic and fair-trade where possible.
The aromatherapy facial is a treatment in its own right, selecting oils to improve the appearance of facial skin. If you would like to book for an aromatherapy facial on its own this is usually a 1 hour treatment. To include a facial as part of a full body aromatherapy massage it’s best to book for 90 minutes.
Indian Head Massage
Massage in India has always played an integral role in the daily lives of its people. Head massage, with the application of oil, is a tradition that is passed down through families. It involves massage of the head, neck, face, shoulders and upper back. These are areas of our bodies that tend to feel the most strain due to our lifestyles and spending hours sitting down in front of computers. Your head is a very heavy part of your body and a heavy weight if carried incorrectly due to poor posture.
Indian Head Massage treatments are applied with aromatherapy essential oils and carrier oils which are nourishing for hair; however you can choose not to have oils. Treatments may either take place in a seated position over clothing or lying face down on a couch with clothing removed.
Good For: stress, relaxation, upper back pain, neck pain, stiff neck.
